Conque is a village surrounded by lush green mountains and grey buildings that exude a sense of history. While Japan experiences the rainy season in May and June, France enjoys a vibrant early summer with colorful flowers and greenery. The Kelsey region in southwestern France offers rich nature, rolling hills, and extensive green forests, with many small villages and ancient Romanesque churches along the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Conque is known as one of the most beautiful villages in France, with its grey houses standing out amidst the greenery, while Saint-Cirq-Lapopie boasts red houses and a unique medieval atmosphere. It is recommended to visit these two charming villages in the Kelsey region for a relaxing and enjoyable experience.
In May and June, Japan is in the midst of the damp rainy season. But in France, it’s a beautiful time in early summer when the flowers and grass are vibrant with colors under the sunlight. Let’s take a look at the Kelshi region in southwestern France where you can enjoy the rich natural beauty.
The Kelshi region is characterized by gentle hills and vast green forests. As it lies along the pilgrimage route from France to Santiago de Compostela, there are many small villages and ancient Romanesque-style churches scattered around.
Known as the “most beautiful rural area in France,” this region is particularly famous for the gray village of Conques (most beautiful in early summer) and the red village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie.
Conques is surrounded by lush green mountains, with its gray tones and a sense of history making it an impressive village. In contrast, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie boasts charming red houses lined up. A trip to these unique rural villages filled with character will provide the utmost satisfaction.
We spoke to Mr. Suzuki of World Air Service about the charm of these two villages.
■1: Conques
Conques is one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in France.” The gray and pale pink stone houses jutting out among green trees create the most beautiful contrast in early summer.
This mountain hideaway is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Santiago de Compostela’s pilgrimage route. While it may be bustling with tourists during the day, the original tranquility returns once the day visitors leave.
You can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere unique to this hidden village. Whether you stroll through the village, sketch, take photos, there are various ways to enjoy it.
Tympanum, located on the east side of Sainte-Foy Church, is a masterpiece of medieval Romanesque art depicting the Last Judgment. The church gleams under the morning sun, making the surroundings look like a work of art.
“Conques is a village quietly nestled in the mountains as if time has stopped since the Middle Ages. The gray roofs and beige walls blend into the surrounding forest and create picturesque scenery.” (Mr. Suzuki, World Air Service)
■2: Saint-Cirq-Lapopie
Saint-Cirq-Lapopie is not only known as one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in France” but also as a village loved by the French people. The red brick and whitewashed houses stand tall on a 100-meter-high cliff, creating a magnificent view. It exudes a unique atmosphere that combines ruggedness and charm.
Stepping into this village feels like entering a medieval world. The buildings from that time still stand, preserving the history. Seeing this, you’ll understand why the entire village is designated as a historic site.
Also, in early summer, the red roofs shining under the sunlight appear even more dazzling. It creates a refreshing scene different from the gray Conques.
“Walking through the narrow streets is enjoyable, but to fully appreciate the panoramic view of the village from the cliff, it’s a must to go down the road to the village along the Lot River.” (Mr. Suzuki, World Air Service)
