Campaigns supporting specific artists or individuals, known as “winning,” used to have a limited scope, but now they have become more common and have expanded their economic impact. The information communication media operated by Interspace Corporation, “Mama Star Select,” conducted a survey on “Oshikatsu” (working mothers) (survey conducted from April 20, 2024, to April 21, 2024, with 792 valid respondents, Web survey). In the survey, 58.3% of respondents answered “yes” to the question “Are you working hard even after becoming a mother?” Moreover, among those actively involved in annual budgeting, the majority (68.5%) answered “less than 50,000 yen,” but 5.7% said they budgeted “30,000 yen or more.” The highest response was “more than 1 million yen.”
The interviewee this time, Shinichiro (alias, 46 years old), married a woman two years younger than him when he was 31 years old, and they now live together as a married couple. His wife was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 35, and after partial excision, she continued to take medication and felt anxious about being a patient for a while. However, she passed the health examination in the fifth year and returned to her previous state of health.
His wife was prepared for death because of a recurrence.
Shinichiro’s wife had been taking medication for 10 years, regularly visiting the hospital for tests and passing the health examination every six years. However, in the seventh year health examination, a lump was found near the treatment site, and subsequent detailed examinations revealed a recurrence. When she was diagnosed with cancer for the first time, she was brave, but this time she cried loudly in front of Shinichiro.
“I was worried the first time, but she didn’t cry in front of me. Maybe she cried alone because she couldn’t rely on me,” he said.
“But when something similar happened again, she called me after the announcement and cried. I immediately went home even though I was at work. My wife said, ‘I can’t go through such painful treatment again. It’s embarrassing, but I didn’t know the pain from the first time…'”
“She said while crying, ‘Please don’t tell anyone else.'”
“We found a small amount of metastasis under the armpit during the examination, but there was no metastasis to other organs. The doctor recommended chemotherapy as a preventive measure, but my wife couldn’t take chemotherapy. She refused chemotherapy and had to accept the changes in her appearance.”
“Because we didn’t inform others about my wife’s condition, various problems arose.”
“My wife, who is a freelancer, stayed in the hospital for a week during work hours, and then had another breast reconstruction surgery. After that, her medication became stronger than before, and she gradually lost weight, but she still discussed it with those around her.” People around her worked hard to diet and behaved cheerfully, but at home, she became even more depressed, feeling as if she was prepared for death.”
